Sunday, May 26th 2013 marked our official Communicative Disorders Graduation Day!! For some of us, it felt like this day would never come! The mood on campus leading up to the ceremony was a combination of frantic preparation and intense excitement…
The processional began promptly at 1:00pm and we paraded into the McKenna Theatre donning our purple caps and gowns. Dr. Nancy Robinson greeted all of our friends and families and we had a special presentation from two members of the Conversation Club, our CD Clinic clients.
Our guest speaker, Professor Flo Kimmerling, shared an inspiring message with all of us…Don’t be mediocre. Mediocrity is measured uniquely to each person. Not living up to your full potential is submitting to mediocrity. However, doing your best, even if it is not as good as others, is not mediocre. Mediocrity is not doing your best and not living up to your full potential!
Our undergraduate speaker, Aine Vejby, and graduate speaker, Emily Jette shared their personal stories amidst cheering and hollering that occasionally erupted from the graduates in their seats. Awards and Recognition were delivered by Dr. Patti Solomon-Rice and a surprise appreciation video was presented (made by the students) to honor and thank all of the professors and staff for their continuous support. Degrees were conferred and yellow roses were thrown into the air!
The day was momentous and it was packed with happiness and a strong sense of achievement. Some of us will be continuing graduate studies at San Francisco State University and some of us will be following different paths. Either way, we all received a transformative education and learned more about ourselves and our personal goals and values.
